How to Transfer a Domain After a Sale

The money comes first, then the domain. Here is the safe order.

Short answerAfter a sale, wait until the escrow service or marketplace confirms the buyer's payment. Then either push the domain to the buyer's account at the same registrar, or unlock it and give the buyer the transfer (EPP/auth) code. Funds are released once the buyer has the domain.

  1. Confirm payment through escrow or the marketplace

Never transfer on the strength of a screenshot or a promise. Wait for the escrow service or marketplace to confirm the funds are secured.
  2. Check the domain can move

Make sure it is not within a registrar lock period (many registrars block transfers for 60 days after a registration, transfer or ownership change) and is not about to expire.
  3. Push or transfer

Same registrar: use its account-to-account push to the buyer's account. Different registrar: remove the transfer lock, then send the EPP/auth code only through the escrow or marketplace channel.
  4. Approve and confirm

Approve any transfer confirmation email from your registrar. The buyer confirms receipt with the escrow service or marketplace.
  5. Get paid

Once the buyer confirms, the escrow or marketplace releases the money to you.

What is an EPP or auth code?

It is a password for the domain that your registrar issues when you want to move it to another registrar. Whoever has it can start a transfer, so share it only after payment is secured.

How long does a domain transfer take?

A push between accounts at the same registrar is usually instant. A transfer between registrars commonly takes up to five to seven days, or less if the losing registrar approves it early.

What is the 60-day lock?

Many registrars block transfers to another registrar for 60 days after a domain is registered, transferred, or has its owner details changed. Check before you promise the buyer a date. A push within the same registrar is often still possible.

Frequently asked questions

Do I give the buyer the auth code or push the domain?
If you and the buyer use the same registrar, a push is quickest. Otherwise unlock the domain and give the auth code through the escrow or marketplace process, after payment is secured.
Who pays for escrow when selling a domain?
Either party, or split it. Agree on it before the deal and write it into the escrow transaction.
Can I cancel after the buyer pays?
Not in good faith. Once you accept a deal and the buyer funds escrow, complete the transfer. Backing out can break marketplace terms and damage your reputation.
